The course is intended for psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and psychologists, as well as professionals in related fields (social workers, educators, counselors) and other specialists who work with adolescents and adolescent issues in their professional practice. The course will be useful for professionals seeking to deepen their clinical thinking and better understand the internal logic of adolescent symptoms, regardless of their theoretical orientation.
This is not an introductory course and requires a basic understanding of psychoanalytic concepts or experience in clinical work with adolescents.
Practical experience working with adolescents quickly reveals that conventional notions of the “adolescent crisis” no longer allow us to understand what is actually happening to today’s adolescents. This course is devoted to a psychoanalytic understanding of adolescence in its contemporary form. Within the framework of the course, adolescence is viewed as a structural transition. On the one hand, we are dealing with what is structurally inevitable: the physical transformation of puberty, the reorganization of narcissism, and the reactivation of infantile conflicts. On the other hand, this transition always unfolds within a specific social context that shapes the paths of a young person’s subjectivation.
The course combines theoretical conceptualizations with clinical thinking and aims to deepen the understanding of adolescence as a distinct, specific field of psychoanalytic work.
Key topics of the course:
• How to think about adolescence today beyond simplified “developmental stage” models
• How to view adolescent psychopathology through subjective logic
• How transference works in adolescent clinical practice
• The analyst’s position when working with adolescents
• How adolescence unfolds in the context of war and migration
